35th Anniversary of Pastors’ Fellowship Congratulations
Anniversaries are times to
remember. The memories from the past provide reflection points as we consider the future. The Pastors’ Fellowship since
its beginning has sought to provide inspiration to church leadership through preaching and speaking prophetically on issues
facing the church and to espouse the biblical doctrine taught by our early church leaders. With fondness I recall such beloved
leaders of yesteryear like Lillie McCutcheon and O. L. Johnson who so positively impacted the kingdom
of God.
The Pastors’ Fellowship has continued to speak into the life of the movement. I remember in the 1980s and ’90s
when resolutions would be presented to the General Assembly by the steering committee or individuals highly invested in Pastors’
Fellowship. These resolutions were presented with conviction and sincerity because of a deep love for God and for the church.
I believe, and have stated overtly, that the future image and ministry of the Church of God reformation movement will be
dependent upon how we address several significant questions. These questions must be addressed by all within the Church of God. These
questions are not new. Dr. John W. V. Smith, our past church historian, stated in his 1980 book The Quest for Holiness and Unity that we must address three issues that have been with us from the beginning.
Those issues are:
1. “Harmonizing methodology with theology in regard to functional procedures in the church.” (p. 436)
2. “The general healing of relationships.”(p. 439)
3. A “cluster of issues relating to the movement’s mission.”(p. 443)
I am committed to building the kingdom of God by focusing on the three foundational blocks of building trust in leadership, returning
to New Testament basics through the Five Strategic Goals, and creating collaborative ministries. As we move forward, I hope
and pray that Pastors’ Fellowship will continue to be in discussion with other entities within the Church of God to
find answers to these and other questions facing our movement.
When I assumed the position of general director of Church of God Ministries in January 2002, I made it a point to
contact the leadership of Pastors’ Fellowship and indicate my intention to attend the May gathering in Winchester. I
have attended every meeting since then and have enjoyed the fellowship and opportunity to address questions that have arisen.
I look forward to the blessings of our continued relationship.
Happy anniversary! May God continue to direct our leaders and the church.
